First Astronomy Scholar Training (FAST) Workshop

Funded by the National Science Foundation and Carnegie Science

In partnership with the Cal-Bridge Program

Research training and computer programming workshop dedicated to recruiting community college students into REU opportunities.

  • fully paid training workshop

    • $25 per hour per student

  • 30 hours over one week

  • preparation and application support for REUs

  • hosted at a world class astronomy research institute

  • instructed by nationally awarded astronomer

Example Program Structure

Morning and afternoon sessions focused on 3 key training components:

  • Coding Skills - including introduction to computer programming with python, unix, and jupyter

  • Research Skills - including small-scale astronomy research projects using real astronomical data

  • Career Skills - including guest lectures on STEM careers and preparation for summer research experiences for undergraduates (REUs) with CV and application feedback.
